How to Sign "What" in ASL

Category: Questions
Handshape: Index finger

Step-by-step

  1. Hold both hands up, palms facing you, fingers relaxed.
  2. Shake your hands slightly side to side.
  3. Furrow your eyebrows — the facial expression is part of the question.

Deaf-culture tip

In ASL, WH-questions (what, where, who, why) use furrowed eyebrows. Without the face, it is not a real question.
